Southampton

Southampton is steeped in maritime heritage and today is known as the cruise capital of Europe. The Mayflower is not the only voyage the city is well known for, the legendary RMS Titanic set sail from White Star Dock in 1912.

The SeaCity Museum tells the story of this tragic journey that impacted the lives of so many in Southampton.

Away from the city's maritime history you can explore some of the finest art collections outside of London, alongside many local artists and creatives too at Southampton City Art Gallery.

The New Forest National Park provides the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and can be easily access from the Southampton to Salisbury community railway.

Setting sail for America

The Mayflower arrived in Southampton in late July 1620 and was joined days later by the Speedwell, carrying Pilgrims from Leiden, Holland.

Many experienced seamen, who had made the Atlantic crossing before, were based in Southampton and joined the two ships. William Brewster, from Scrooby, is thought to have boarded the Mayflower here as well.

On 15 August 1620 the Mayflower and Speedwell weighed anchor and set sail for America.
