St. Wilfrid's Church, Scrooby

The villages of Babworth and Scrooby are at the start of the Mayflower story. Here you can trace the early steps of the Pilgrims' as you explore quaint churches, historic manor houses and charming villages.

The county is also well known for the bustling city of Nottingham, a centre for cultural, sporting and retail excellence. Explore nearby Sherwood Forest, believed to have been home to the legend of Robin Hood.

William Brewster, from Scrooby, was a leading figure in the Separatist movement. Inspired by the radical words of Richard Clifton, the rector of nearby All Saints Church in Babworth, Brewster is believed to have founded a separatist Church in his family home, Scrooby Manor House.

Today you can visit All Saints Church in Babworth and St Wilfrid's Church in Scrooby.

In nearby Retford you can delve into the fascinating history of the Separatists at the Pilgrims Gallery located inside Bassetlaw Museum.

Listen to William Brewster tell tales of his life in a replica of his study and learn about what life was like for Separatists in Babworth and Scrooby before they joined the Mayflower journey.

VISITING BY TRAIN

Take the train from London Kings Cross to Retford. From Retford Station take the Sherwood Arrow bus heading to Ollerton for a short two minute journey. Leave the bus at the sports ground and walk the remaining 15 minutes to get to All Saints' Church, Babworth. Alternatively walk the full route in around 35 minutes.

For Scrooby, leave the train at Retford and walk 15 minutes into the town centre to Retford Bus Station. Take the no. 99 bus towards Doncaster and enjoy the 15 minute journey taking you into the heart of the charming village of Scrooby. Plan your journey here.
