January doesn't have to just be about giving things up. Try new things, jump into different experiences and with so many scenic rail adventures to choose from you'll never be short of ideas!

Here are just a few suggestions of how you can explore Britain by rail and don't forget you can visit for more inspiration. So what are you waiting for? Get planning and make 2018 the year of adventures!

Explore Scotland's rugged landscape by train as you journey along the Highland Line or follow in the footsteps of Harry Potter and his magical friends as they travelled along the spectacular West Highland Line.

Epic scenery awaits along the Cambrian Line so make sure to take your camera with you! The Conwy Valley Line, also in Wales, hugs the Conwy River and delivers you straight into the heart and splendour of Snowdonia.

A visit to Poldark country and the glorious beaches of the St Ives Bay Line and Riviera Line are a must! Take a ride further inland and discover the historic Transwilts Line, meandering through the beautiful countryside of Wiltshire.

Island Line on the Isle of Wight.

Looking for a unique adventure? You can't beat the Island Line where visitors travel on a refurbished London tube train across the Isle of Wight. Explore the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as you journey on the picturesque North Downs Line.

Step back in time and combine a visit on the Derwent Valley Line with a ride on a historic railway. Choose from Peak Rail or Ecclesbourne Valley Heritage Railway, both attached to stations along the main line. From the North Staffordshire Line you can explore Stoke-on-Trent, affectionately known as The Potteries that boasts award winning museums.

Experience the scenic beauty of North Norfolk as you journey along the Bittern Line, travelling through the heart of the Broads National Park. Travel along the East Suffolk Lines and combine your visit with some time in the bustling town of Ipswich, walking through the streets of Felixstowe's charming seaside town or head further up the coast and visit the most easterly part of mainland Britain in Lowestoft.

Further north you can discover Cumbria's dramatic scenery by rail with a ride on the Cumbrian Coast Line from Barrow-in-Furness to the historic city of Carlisle. From Carlisle board the train that will take you over the spectacular Ribblehead Viaduct along the Settle to Carlisle Line.

Exploring Yorkshire? Take the train from the vibrant city of Leeds direct to the coast of Morecambe or the historic town of Lancaster with a trip along the Bentham Line. Be sure to take your walking boots with you as there's lots of opportunities to leave the train and explore the beautiful countryside on foot.
